OR Fab Tire Carrier - Reviews

Customer Rating Love it, no rattles

I had the A frame tire carrier before, where the mount attached to the bumper the weld broke. I went with this one because I need the extra gas when doing long off road trips. yes it takes work to install, even more work on mine because I have a roof rack and had to get my mounting brackets to attach where the mounting brackets are for the tire carrier. The photos in their instructions suck. Go online to their website for way better photos. Their customer support was a lot of help. As far as taking this off road? I just did a three day two night pounding off road trip. Both gas cans full, hi lift jack, 35" tire and another 5 gal gas can strapped to the carrier. No rattles and not one problem. My spare tire did get caught on a few drops, but so did my rear bumper. Great product! Held up to a beating.

The workmanship is average at best. The fitment is where all the problems are, the bumper holes are not round so the bumper can move around if you hit an obstacle and possibly cause body damage to your Jeep. Also, pray you don't have to call them, their customer service is the worst in the industry.

Customer Rating Or Fab gate tire carrier

Installed this on a 2006 Rubicon, took about 2 1/2 hours to install. Fit and Finish is good. make sure the support brackets on the inside are tight against the back of the tub before tightning, you will need to cut or grind away the body sealer if this is not mated properly you will buckle the rear of the tub when tightning all the bolts in the final fit up. And yes the tailgate is bothersome to align but not impossible! The only complaint I have is the cheesy latch, I'm upgrading to a De-sta-co latch here soon.

Customer Rating Tire/jerry can carrier

Yes this is moderately difficult to install and mine also took me about 3 hours. Lining up the tailgate and getting it to shut as tightly was impossible. It does look good and so far does not rattle. The latch could not be mounted as low as I would have liked and adjustment of the tire carrier to compensate... Well I'll have to do some more tweaking. Overall though I like it.

Customer Rating Looks as good as it sounds.

Mine was installed in about 3 hours, I really didn't think it was all that hard...there are a few writeups out there. It's rock solid and super quiet. It also looks really nice and had all the goodies like a highlift mount and can hold 2 jerry cans which is pretty nice. The only problem with mine is that it's hard to close and it's denting my tailgate slightly, but those are just minor issues probably due to my install.

Customer Rating Hard to install.

The OR-Fab kit looks great once you get it on... but it takes lots of work to get it on. I installed it on an 03 Rubicon and it took 2 days... yes two days. You must drill serveral new holes and remove the rear wheel liner and gas canister.. PAIN IN THE BUTT. Once that is out, it is quite difficult to tighten the bolts. If you have any rear lower rocker guards, you'll have to remove them too. The latch was also rusting... when I opened it!!! A call to OR-FAB was needed... They told me they some latches were welded after the powder coat as put on... so the powder coat was burned off. They sent me a new latch... but I have to have it welded on at my own expense. After I completed the install, the kit has performed well. It is rugged and does not sag even when fully loaded. Some rattles and a bit of rust has appear here/there. For the cost, $900, I can't really say I'd recommend it. Kits that mount to the rear bumper plate or just to the bumper are a better choices.
